Sighisoara is an outstanding testimony to the culture of the Transylvanian Saxons, a culture that is coming to a close after 850 years and will continue to exist only through its architectural and urban monuments. |
Gradually, different architectural styles were added, but the mix of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and other 19th-century eclectic styles melt together subtly in an urban symphony. |
An amalgam of roofs, pastel facades and cobblestone streets, Sighisoara has a very strong medieval air, that even the communist regime was enough sensitive not to destroy it. |
The Medieval Festival
Each year, at the end of July, Sighisoara sets up The Medieval Festival. The small and quiet citadel becomes scanty, this time being conquered not by the Ottoman or Hungarian armies, but by the army of visitors desirous to relive the medieval atmosphere of the old times.
Hundreds of merchants come to sell their commodities related more or less to this atmosphere. Thousands of tourists come to buy them or to get lost in the sounds of the old music and to live like the noblemen, princesses or knights.
For three days the festival is before anything else a cultural event, a presentation of theater plays, music shows, pantomime and dances, all of them interspersed with prize competitions and entertainment activities.
